Take up arms facebook app
Starz, eager to herald the return of their flagship original series, partnered with and company to roll out a 3-month long Facebook initiative. The Take Up Arms Facebook app utilized the social media giant's platform to foster awareness, drive tune-in and provide consumer engagement opportunities. With gaming and challenges that highlight the seven primary cast members, users can immerse themselves in the season's Roman vs. Rebels storyline.

Take Up Arms is comprised of a series of challenges and activities for users who like the Spartacus Facebook page. First, participants get to select their leader, aligning themselves with either the Rebels or the Romans. Once they join, fans are able to earn points for their team and their chosen leader through a series of challenges. To sustain user engagement, these challenges were rolled out gradually over the weeks leading up to the show's premiere, and continued to roll out as the season progressed. These challenges also tied in with a large sweepstakes featuring weekly prizes and one grand prize trip to New Zealand to visit the set.
The first challenge encouraged users to recruit their army. Participants could invite up to six Facebook friends to join each day, and earned points for every one who did. The second challenge, "Suit Up," enabled users to envision themselves as an ancient warrior by uploading their face onto a customizable Rebel or Roman body.



Challenge 3 allowed users to create their own mash-ups with footage from each weel's show. Users were able to get a preview of the coming week's action, as well as create their own fantasy scenarios with footage. This challenge utilized clips, graphics, sound effects and score from the series itself. Participants could then rate the original video creations, with the top-rated video airing on Starz.

Challenge 4 allowed participants to create customized Facebook Timeline covers using Spartacus themed imagery. As one of the first Facebook Timeline customization tools available, we were eager to be able to take advantage of this new image-focused format and provide users with an opportunity to create one-of-a-kind covers for their Timelines. Challenge 5 aimed to drive viewership by providing users with opportunities to earn more points for their team by answering weekly video challenges based on the action in that week's episode.

Take Up Arms was launched in early December 2011 to rave reviews from national press. With coverage in the The Hollywood Reporter, Forbes, MediaPost and Deadline Hollywood, we loved being able to sit alongside Starz and blaze new ground in their use of social media to foster consumer engagement. However, the biggest reward was the Spartacus: Vengeance season premiere, which opened to 10% higher viewership than the previous season. A leader did rise... and so did the ratings!
